WACOM Components opens new possibilities for mobile phone users

29-30 April 2003, ExCel Centre, London, booth 6 & 7 - At Symbian Exposium03 in London, WACOM Components who recently joined the Symbian Platinum Partner Programme, presents its new 2.2 inch technology demonstrator for third generation (3G) mobile phones.

Running on the demonstrator are a number of different applications which highlight the considerable advantages that WACOM`s patented Penabled™ technology provides compared to conventional pen input technologies such as resistive or capacitive.

A 2.2 inch sensor has been integrated with a 2.2" Seiko Epson LCD, and will be simulating a UIQ style user interface. UIQ is one of the styles of UI (user interface) for the Symbian OS platform. Consequently, visitors will be able to learn how the WACOM pen will feel when being used on a mobile phone display.

One application feature which will be demonstrated is "Tool tips". It has been added to the icons in the user interface, and will give a description of the icon as the pen hovers over the icon to give a more intuitive, descriptive and 3-dimensional user interface.

With a colour palette, a sketch mode allows to demonstrate the pressure sensitivity of the pen. Natural-looking lines can be drawn. The harder the pen tip is pressed down on the LCD, the thicker the lines or stronger the colours or effects become.

Also included in the showcase is a mapping simulation so that two levels of zooming capability can be viewed.

Gesture recognition is another function that is enhanced by WACOM Penabled™ technology. It gives the user the ability to navigate faster without using menus, and simply gesturing above the surface of the display.

The majority of Tablet PCs available today uses WACOM's pen sensing technology. Penabled™ is an embedded solution with the sensor located behind the LCD, allowing 100 per cent luminous light transmission and no colour wash producing a clear display with vivid colours. Additionally, the concept provides a more rugged solution compared to other technologies, ensuring that it is environmentally well protected and not exposed to dirt, moisture, high temperatures and physical abuse. This makes the solution more durable and reliable and thus ideally fit for use in mobile devices including Smartphones, PDAs and Tablet PCs.
